2026 Spring Walkathon for Hope and Health: A Weekend Recap

This past weekend was a vibrant and impactful one for our UNAA-Atlanta community, marked by health, connection, and meaningful service. We successfully hosted the 2026 Spring Walkathon for Hope and Health, bringing together individuals and families in a shared spirit of wellness and unity.

A key highlight of the weekend was the community health drive, made possible through the dedication of the Uganda North American Medical Society (UNAMS) medical team. Community members had access to essential services, including blood screenings and general health checkups, creating valuable opportunities for early detection, awareness, and preventive care. Moments like these remind us that health is not just personal; it is collective.

Beyond screenings, participants took part in the ~3 mile Walkathon, embracing physical activity through walking or running as a cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle. The energy, encouragement, and sense of togetherness on display were truly inspiring.

In the lead-up to the walkathon, we launched the UNAA StepUp 25-Day, 150-Mile Challenge. This initiative was designed to motivate and prepare the us while building momentum across the community. We proudly celebrate all who took on the challenge and reached their milestones. Your commitment and discipline set a powerful example for us all. These individuals were awarded for their achievements:

  • Trailblazer Award: Elly Kaganzi

  • Slow but Steady Award: Juliet Ssenjakko

  • Family Participation Award: Agnes & David Kasolo

  • Comeback Award: Jonathan Asiimwe

  • Impact Champion: Agnes Kakaire

The weekend also featured an important service from the Embassy of Uganda, which provided Passport and National ID services. Nearly 200 community members showed up to either pick up, renew, or register for National IDs or renew their Ugandan passports. This level of support is vital for diaspora communities like ours, and we extend our sincere gratitude to the Embassy team for their continued dedication and service to UNAA-Atlanta.

To everyone who attended, participated, volunteered, or supported these events, thank you. Your involvement is what makes these moments meaningful and impactful. And to those who couldn’t join us this time, we look forward to welcoming you at future events as we continue to grow, connect, and uplift one another.

Finally, this weekend served as a powerful reminder to carry hope into everything we do; our lives, families, work, health, and communities. Hope is not just a wish; it is a strategy. It allows us to trust the process when the finish line is not yet visible. It helps us push through the “no’s” until we find the “yes,” and it reminds us of past victories when facing present challenges.

In the midst of everything around us, let us continue to lean on the pillars of hope: Faith, Connection, and Identity, and use hope as a way to encourage, uplift, support, and bless others.

Thanks

Benjamin Kaguwo

President UNAA-Atlanta
